Varanasi
or Banaras is one of the oldest cities of India. It’s also called Kashi
or the city of spiritual light.
This ancient city of India is located on holy river Ganga. It’s a place
popularly known for the religious spirituality it contains with the Ganges,
the Temples, the ashrams etc. But Banaras has also produced many exponents
of art, music, literature and crafts and of course who can forget the Banarsi
silk sarees.
Varanasi or Banaras, since ages has been famous for the handicraft items. Banaras
has also been famous for the 'Gharanas' in the Classical Music and Singing.
Apart from the Silk Sarees, Brocades and Carpets Banaras also offers you Brassware,
copperware, Ivoryware, Glass beads and bangles, wood and clay toys and exquisite
gold Jewellery. The main shopping areas of the city are the City chowk, Godoulia,
Vishwanath lane, Gyan Vapi, Thatheri Baazar, Dasashvamedh, Goldhar and Lahurabir.
The main attractions of the city are The Ghats Of Varanasi, Durga Temple,
The Kashi Vishwanath Temple / Gyanvapi Mosque, Bharat Mata Temple. In Tulsi
Manas Temple Goswami Tulsidas composed the epic “Ramacharitramanas”.
Other places to see are Ram Nagar Durg, Bharat KalaBhawan, Banaras Hindu University,Nepali
Temple and Jantar Mantar.
Among the excursions comes: Sarnath which is about ten kms from Varanasi,
is the place where Lord Buddha after enlightenment gave his first sermon or
as the Buddhist say set the wheel of Dharma or law rolling. Then there are
Chunar or Chunargarh of 'Chandrakanta', Jaunpur, Kaushambi the residing place
of Pandu Brothers and Vindhyachal is one of the Shaktipeeths in India.
The famous fairs and festivals are Buddh Purnima, the Bharat Milap fair, Ramlila,
Nakkatyya, Hanumant Jayanti, Mahashivratri, the Dhrupad Mela and Panch Koshi
Parikrama Varanasi has a extreme type of climate so the best season to visit
Varanasi during September to March.
