Towards
the southeastern part of Patna is a village called Bada Gaon, near
the village are the world famous ruins of Nalanda. The university flourished
during the 5th and 12th century. Careful excavation of the place has revealed
many Stupas, Monasteries, hostels, stair cases, meditation halls, lecture halls
and many other structures which speak of the splendour and grandeur this place
had enjoyed when the place was a centre of serios study.
The main market is that of Rajgir where there are good shops selling decorative
items, gift articles, handicraft, stones and seashell items. One can also
go for shopping in the Kund area of Rajgir.
The main attractions of Nalanda are The Nalanda University Ruins. Hieun Tsang
Memorial Hall contains the writings of the Chinese traveller informing about
the 5th century period.
Surya Mandir is a Temple dedicated to Sun God has also got a five feet high
statue of Parvati. The Museum has got a good collection of ancient manuscripts
and Buddhist statues. The Museum also displays the culture of the Hindu society
during the Maurya, Gupta and other periods. Among the other places to see
are Nav Nalanda Vihar where Pali University has been estabished by the Bihar
Government for the research work of Buddhism and Pali. Just 1.6 kms from the
ruins of Nalanda is the place of Kundalpur believed to be the birthplace of
Lord Mahavira.
Nalanda is located in the plains and has typical hot summers and cold winters.
The best season to visit this place is between March and October.
