Konark

Previously
known as the Black PaGoda by sailors in comparison of the white washed Temples
of Puri, Konark Temple contains a great mass of magnetic iron, which would draw
unwary ships to the shore.
Yet Konark has various other specimen than the Sun Temple. The Nine Planets
Shrine is a six metre chlorite slab, now the centerpiece of a small shrine.
The carved seated figures represent Surya (the Sun), Chandra (the moon), Mars,
Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu. Konark Beach is an oasis in
itself just 3 km away from the Temple. Outside the Temple enclosure is a Archeological
Museum containing many sculpture and carvings found during the excavation
of the Temple.
Among other places you can check out are Goddess Ramachandi Temple where
you can witness the merger of river Kushabhadra with the sea. There is Saiva
shrine and the sea Beach make Baleswar a tourist spot; Balighai is a sea turtle
research center; Kurum is an important archaeological site; Kakatpur is a
shrine of Goddess Mangala on River Prachi; Chourasi is having the Temple of
Goddess Barahi.
One can visit Konark throughout the year still the best season to visit is
between October to March.
